we are a community owned grocery store emphasizing local, organic, and whole foods.
Founded by an energetic group of activists in the 1970’s, the Syracuse Cooperative Market’s Kensington location has been the Westcott neighborhood’s grocery store for over 50 years. The Co-op’s founders envisioned a cooperatively-owned community, with access to high-quality food and a way to support local growers and producers. In April 2021, we opened our second location in the Salt City Market in order to serve a broader part of the Syracuse community.
Since our founding, the Syracuse Cooperative Market has been a community-owned grocery store focused on local, organic, and whole foods. With locations now in both the Westcott and Downtown neighborhoods, the Co-op is driven by member participation and commitment to community. We are open to the public – no membership required! – and carry a full line of groceries, fresh produce, and prepared foods. It is our mission to provide great food, be a hub for a strong community, and promote the local economy.
As a cooperative, we stand for more than just great food:
The 7 Co-op Principles
A cooperative exists to serve its members, but what makes co-ops unique is that the members are also the owners! In addition to getting the products and services you need, you also have a say in the business decisions your cooperative makes.
The Co-op is member-owned, but membership is voluntary. You do not have to be a member to shop with us. We are open to the public – all are welcome!
The Syracuse Cooperative Market is a democratic organization, governed by our member-elected Board of Directors.
Our members make an economic investment in the Co-op through an equity payment. This capital supports the development of the Co-op to better serve our members.
The Co-op is independently operated, and owned by our members!
We’re passionate about the importance of cooperatives, and provide education to our members, Board, staff, and community about the benefits of cooperation.
Co-ops are made stronger by working together! We’re proud to support co-ops like Organic Valley (Cropp Co-op), Frontier Co-op, Once Again Nut Butters, Blue Diamond, Alaffia, and Equal Exchange. As an organization, we also belong to several co-ops, including National Cooperative Grocers, The National Cooperative Business Association, Frontier Natural Products Co-op, River Valley Market, and the Syracuse Cooperative Federal Credit Union.
We support our community through participation in local events, donations made to community groups & organizations, supporting local farmers and businesses, and our Round Up program!
